Honestly, although I’ve heard so many times how quick and easy is to make homemade toffee, it still seemed so overwhelming to actually give it a go. Was never sure for how long to boil the whole sugar and butter mixture and because I’ve failed a couple of times trying to make caramel, I though making candy would be even worse.
Not anymore. Making homemade toffee at home has never been easier as long as you have a candy thermometer. Yes, you’ll need one! There will be no worries and most importantly no fails, when using one. The recipe is super easy and you probably already have everything you need to make toffee:
butter (good quality, full fat butter, makes a big difference) sugar chocolate chips nuts: walnuts, pecans, etc
To make toffee recipe, you add butter and sugar to a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil over medium high heat. As the toffee mixture boils, the color will change from yellow to a rich caramel tone and your candy thermometer will show around 285 degrees. Remove from heat. Pour your toffee mixture into a prepared dish and then wait for 5 minutes before adding the chocolate chips. Wait a further 5 minutes for the chocolate to melt and spread it around on top of the toffee and top with chopped nuts. To store this toffee recipe, place in an airtight container, adding baking paper layers between toffee pieces so they won’t stick.
