Each crochet hook is assigned a letter depending on it’s size in millimeters. When beginning, I suggest picking a hook with letter H or I, they are a good size to start with for most basic projects. It’s large enough to get your hook through each chain, yet not too bulky to handle.

Boye is a great brand. I’ve picked up this 8 pack above with most main sizes, just in case I need something different for a project. I’ve also purchased a letter N for really chunky yarn like chenille or a rope style yarn. Drew from Crochet Dude also carries some great crochet products, hooks included. Find his stuff online or a Michael’s crafts. He also sells a great beginner’s kit. I also happened upon a custom crochet hook maker, Craftwich, at a local craft fair and bought this hand carved wooden crochet hook below. She had a whole display of crochet projects and handmade hooks. I really felt like I was choosing my perfect “wand”. This one below spoke to me. It’s a letter H and I love it!

Simply go with something basic and as you get into it, you’ll find one that will fit perfect for you! Good luck hook hunting :)
