I have been looking for ages for what I would call the best homemade buttercream frosting! Most of the recipes have the same ingredients: unsalted butter, vanilla extract, sometimes cream or milk is added and of course, powdered sugar. Well, here is where everything goes crazy…the amount of powdered sugar J You can find recipes that will vary the quantity of powdered sugar anywhere between 1 cup and 7 cups!! Have tried to make this Homemade Buttercream Frosting recipe initially with what I thought would be a good average compromise: 4 cups of powdered sugar and it still was extremely sweet for my liking. It’s all in our taste buds I kept reducing the amount of powdered sugar till 2 cups where I had my winner recipe.
So, my biggest tip when it comes to making buttercream frosting is not about the temperature of the butter or the type of cream or milk added….it’s about tasting the frosting as you are gradually adding powdered sugar. Taste, taste, taste. That simple. You’ll know when it’s just perfect for you. You can always play with this buttercream recipe and make chocolate buttercream frosting, by adding melted chocolate, or caramel buttercream, almond flavored buttercream or even Nutella buttercream frosting. The possibilities are endless, once you have your favorite butter – powdered sugar ratios in place!

8oz unsalted butter, at room temperature 3 tablespoons whipping cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups powdered sugar
